2024 Concluded

Congrats, we all made it!

I’m sitting at a friends dinner table in Berlin watching the final hours of 2024 tick by. What a year it’s been.

I earned a dreadful case of food poisoning in Ghana, was stuck in a typhoon in Hong Kong, got sucker punched in the face in Berlin, and broke up with a serious girlfriend. These each were brutal in different ways, the first being 48 hours of hell, ending in me only eating rice for two weeks (lesson, don’t eat the weird looking fish that no one is touching).

Then there were all the other moments. I was lucky enough to be invited to go to Paris during the Olympics and watch my friends compete at the highest level. My dad released a great documentary, which has been well received by its viewers. My teams little business is (very slowly) starting to crawl on its own. I spent significant time in San Fransisco, diving deeper into AI with some of the top startups in the world. And, I got to spend a total of 10 weeks with my parents, which was so great (and frustrating, but mostly great)!

All this being said, I learned one big lesson. People are the only thing that really matter. The most important things I did this year had nothing to do with places or things, only people. The more I build in AI the more I realise how valuable connections between people are. And the multiplier on that is how you make those around you feel. Simple. Stupid. True.

The one lesson that I still need to internalise is to move towards focus. Cut the things that don’t matter and focus on the things that do. My tendency is to try to do everything, all at once. That means accept every project, and build every idea. That shit doesn’t work as well as I thought it would. I’m learning that returns come from commitment.
